If you’ve been researching silk scarves, you’ve probably come across the word “momme” (pronounced “mo-mee”).
Momme is the standard unit used to measure the weight of silk fabric. The higher the momme, the thicker and heavier the silk.
For square scarves, the most common weights are:
12 momme – Light and airy. Very translucent. Best for warm weather or very delicate styling.
14 momme – The sweet spot. Substantial enough to hold its shape, but still fluid and graceful. Ideal for everyday wear and gifting.
16 momme – Noticeably richer in handfeel. More drape and durability. A luxurious upgrade.
18 momme – Heavyweight silk with a substantial hand. Excellent structure, but less of that airy floatiness.
So which one should you choose?
For gifting or first-time buyers, 14 momme and 16 momme are the most recommended. They offer a beautiful balance of weight, softness, and durability — substantial enough to feel luxurious, yet still light and flowing.
That said, heavier is not always better. A scarf that is too thick loses the airy, effortless quality that makes silk so special. True silk elegance lies in its lightness and fluid movement — not just its weight.
At ModernScarf, we use 14 momme and 16 momme mulberry silk in most of our designs — because we believe a luxury scarf should feel both substantial and weightless. Like art you can wear.
